What the tablets say — and what was added later
Anuna/Anunnaki is a changing category of Mesopotamian deities, not the fixed name of an alien species. The ancient texts preserve divine assemblies, labour, fate and underworld judgment; they do not describe a hidden planet approaching Earth.

Sumerian spellings include da-nun-na and da-nun-na-ke₄-ne; Akkadian forms include Anunnaku/Anunnaki. Proposed meanings concern princely or divine offspring, but the etymology is not settled. ‘Those who came from heaven’ is not a standard scholarly translation.
A crossing term, not a collision planet
Nēbiru is Akkadian and occurs in Babylonian astronomical and theological texts with varying identifications, often in connection with Marduk. It is not an ancient Sumerian prediction of a twelfth planet striking Earth.

- Zecharia Sitchin's 1976 book The 12th Planet made Nibiru a long-period planet and supplied the framework for the modern story. The ancient term Nēbiru is real, but it does not consistently designate one hidden planet.
- WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
- Public astronomical observations have not identified a body matching Sitchin's proposed size, orbit and approach. Ancient texts likewise contain no fixed account of a ‘twelfth planet’ on course to hit Earth.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- The existence of an ancient term is separate from the existence of a modern approaching object. Research into distant hypothetical planets, including Planet Nine, is not evidence for a collision-bound Nibiru.

The Anunnaki were extraterrestrials from Nibiru
- THE CLAIM
- Ancient records are said to describe Anunnaki visitors mining gold on Earth and genetically creating humans.
- WHERE IT STARTED
- Sitchin reread Mesopotamian divine names and creation literature as a history of space visitation. Books, documentaries and online videos later compressed his interpretation into ‘what the Sumerians wrote.’
- WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
- Anuna and Anunnaki do occur in ancient texts, but their roles vary across periods and compositions. Standard translations do not directly describe spacecraft, extraterrestrial gold mining or genetic engineering.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- A modern author's translation must not be treated as the ancient text itself. Cuneiform spelling, context, manuscript tradition and scholarly translations must be checked before assigning an extraterrestrial meaning.
03PHYSICAL EVENT
Nibiru will stop Earth's rotation and cause a pole shift
- THE CLAIM
- A close passage is said to stop Earth's rotation and rapidly displace the crust or rotational axis, producing global destruction.
- WHERE IT STARTED
- This detailed scenario is associated especially with Nancy Lieder's ZetaTalk rather than ancient texts. ZetaTalk tied a Planet X passage, rotation stoppage and physical pole shift to May 2003.
- WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
- No such passage, stoppage or sudden crustal displacement occurred in May 2003. Gradual magnetic-pole movement and geomagnetic reversals are different phenomena from an abrupt planetary flip caused by a passing world.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- Magnetic-pole movement, geomagnetic reversal, axial change and crustal displacement must remain distinct. Real geophysical terminology does not verify ZetaTalk's rapid catastrophe scenario.
04DISASTER ATTRIBUTION
Earthquakes, floods and extreme weather are signs of Nibiru
- THE CLAIM
- Earthquakes, eruptions, floods, heat or unusual sky phenomena are attributed to the gravity or electromagnetic influence of an unseen planet.
- WHERE IT STARTED
- After the 2003 forecast failed, new dates were paired with disaster footage and weather reports, recasting real events as advance signs of Nibiru.
- WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
- Earthquakes, floods and climate extremes are observed and studied, but no astronomical data or demonstrated causal pathway connects them to Nibiru. The occurrence of a disaster does not establish that cause.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- Check whether location, period, scale and cause were specified before the event, and whether unrelated events were added afterward. Hazard decisions should follow geological and meteorological observations and official warnings.
05MOVING DEADLINES
Collision dates keep changing after 2003 and 2012
- THE CLAIM
- When a deadline passes, secrecy or recalculation is invoked and a new year or astronomical event is presented as the next passage date.
- WHERE IT STARTED
- After May 2003 passed, ZetaTalk described the date as a ‘White Lie’. Nibiru was later merged with the 2012 Mayan doomsday narrative—which was not Sitchin's own dated forecast—and resurfaces around comets, eclipses and Planet Nine news.
- WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS
- No passage or collision of the stated scale occurred in 2003 or 2012. A revised date after expiry is a new claim with new test conditions, not a successful continuation of the old forecast.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- Fix the first publication, wording, deadline and resolution criteria. Record the outcome when time expires, and register any revised date separately without erasing the prior failure.

Author who popularised the Nibiru–Anunnaki reading
- LIFE AND ACTIVITY
- Born in Baku and raised in Palestine, Sitchin studied economics at the University of London, worked in journalism and editing in Israel, and moved to New York in 1952. He described his study of cuneiform as self-directed; no record has been found of a professional academic career in Assyriology or ancient Near Eastern studies.
- PUBLICATIONS AND CLAIMS
- Beginning with The 12th Planet in 1976, his Earth Chronicles series read the Babylonian creation epic as literal Solar System history. He identified Nibiru as a planet on an approximately 3,600-year orbit and the Anunnaki as beings who came from it.
- VERIFICATION BOUNDARY
- Sitchin's books are the starting point of the modern ‘Nibiru as the Anunnaki home world’ narrative. They must be distinguished from ancient uses of Anuna and Nēbiru. Sitchin did not identify Nancy Lieder's 2003 encounter scenario or the 2012 doomsday claim as his own forecast.

- Based in Wisconsin, Lieder founded ZetaTalk. She describes herself as an emissary relaying messages from extraterrestrial ‘Zetas’. ZetaTalk began in an online forum in January 1995 and moved to an independent website later that year; the site continues to publish newsletters, Q&As and survival material.

- Her early material used ‘Planet X’, linking it to Sitchin's Nibiru by 1996. It proposed that a close passage would stop Earth's rotation and trigger a physical pole shift, and publicly attached the scenario to dates in May 2003.
