CASE FILE · DD-24

1978 Frederick Valentich disappearance

Period · 1978Place · Bass Strait, Australia

01 · OVERVIEW

Case overview

On 21 October 1978, Frederick Valentich was flying Cessna 182L VH-DSJ from Moorabbin toward King Island when he radioed Melbourne Flight Service about an unidentified aircraft apparently following him. After roughly six minutes, a metallic noise was heard and contact ceased. Searches found neither pilot nor aircraft. The UFO interpretation became famous, but spatial disorientation, aircraft failure and an ordinary crash remain major alternatives.
