Bronze Age collapse and the spread of iron

After eastern Mediterranean palaces and exchange networks fractured, political scale and metal use were reorganized.

THE RECORD

What changed

During the thirteenth and twelfth centuries BCE, palace systems across the eastern Mediterranean were destroyed or reduced and exchange networks weakened. Iron use expanded gradually over subsequent centuries.

EVIDENCE

What remains

Destruction layers, interrupted texts, settlement change and shifts in metal assemblages reveal both rupture and continuity by region.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why it matters

Complex interdependence can be both strength and vulnerability. Iron was not an instantly superior replacement for bronze; it spread through new resource networks and skills.

OPEN QUESTION

Where interpretation begins

No single invasion explains the change. Drought, earthquakes, conflict, migration and systems failure carried different weight by region, and even ‘collapse’ can oversimplify.
