Case overview
The Utsuro-bune story says that in 1803 a hollow round vessel drifted onto the coast of Hitachi with a foreign-looking woman, unknown writing and a box aboard. It survives not in a contemporary official report but in later compilations such as Toen shōsetsu (1825) and Hyōryū kishū (1844), with illustrations. It can be read within Japanese castaway and foreign-vessel traditions; its rounded design prompted twentieth-century UFO reinterpretations.
