Case overview
Before dawn on 20 September 1977, residents of Petrozavodsk reported a bright object spreading jellyfish-like rays across the sky. Reports covered a wide area and Soviet scientific institutions reviewed the event. The launch of Kosmos-955 from Plesetsk at the same time makes sunlit rocket exhaust in the upper atmosphere the leading explanation. Secrecy surrounding the Soviet space programme and limited access to records nevertheless prolonged speculation.
